As our population ages, families are increasingly unable to meet the demand for caregiving and long-term care services. The ratio of potential family caregivers for each person who may need care is declining sharply from more than seven potential caregivers for each person who needs care in 2010 to only four in 2030. By 2050, the ratio is expected to be less than 3 to 1.

At the same time, Washington is experiencing a shortage in the professional direct care workforce. Supporting family caregivers, bolstering the caregiver workforce, and providing resources to families with care needs will be critical over the coming years.

Join us this Thursday, October 6 from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. via Zoom to hear more about what the state is doing, including an overview of the WA Cares Fund, and what it’s like to be a professional caregiver.

WA Cares staff will be joined by:

• Susan Engels, Office Chief of the State Unit on Aging (DSHS)
• Christine Morris, Office Chief, Training, Communications and Workforce Development (DSHS)
• Dani Rice, Caregiver

Panelists will each give an overview of their work, followed by a discussion and audience Q&A. A brief summary of WA Cares will also be provided. We encourage all to come with their questions ready!

WA Cares Fund is a first-in-the-nation universal long-term care insurance program that provides working Washingtonians with access to affordable long-term care. By paying a small premium while working (just 0.58% of wages, or $0.58 per $100 earned), Washington’s workers will earn a $36,500 benefit that can be used for a variety of long-term care services, including paid caregiving from a professional or loved one, home modifications, meal delivery and more.
