Family Relationships—Marital Biography: Cohabitation and Divorce in Later Life
Patterns of marriage and family life have changed substantially with the baby boom generation leading the way in greater acceptance of divorce and cohabitation. Marriage and divorce are complex life transitions and factors such as prior marriages, their timing, their duration and blended family expectations, must be considered when working with older adults in clinical settings. Of particular concern are the consequences for economic security and one’s health status regarding decisions to re-partner or remain single.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand how marital biographies of older adults, including cohabitation, divorce and remarriage, have changed over time and gained social acceptance.
- Describe the financial and health consequences of late life marital transitions.
Each Round Table is approved for 1.5 ETHICS CEUs by the NASW Washington State Chapter. Licensed Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists & Mental Health Counselors are eligible. Provider number #1975-256. This program complies with WSNA for Continuing Nursing Education for individuals whose professional practice is in the field of gerontology.
